Natural fibre insulation is the best option for internal wall insulation as it is ‘vapour permeable’, so it reduces the risk of interstitial condensation getting trapped in the building fabric which can cause mould and rot. It is ideal for older homes with solid masonry external walls which rely on vapour permeability. It ‘buffers’ heat and water vapour, creating a better internal environment, and does not ‘off-gas’ harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
Natural products have a much lower carbon footprint that materials based on minerals and fossil fuels (PIR, Phenolic foam, PUR).
There are many different types of natural insulation including :
- wood fibre (eg. Steico, Pavatex)
- hemp (eg. IndiNature)
- insulating plaster made from lime, clay and cork (Diasen)
- sheep’s wool (Thermafleece)
