  • Learn about energy efficiency, renewable energy, water re-use and conservation, healthy buildings and avoiding hazardous building materials.
  • This course will equip attendees with the practical understanding to plan their own eco-refurbishment of an existing building, and to transform it into a cosy, low impact, energy efficient home or other space.

Topics will include:

  • Solid wall insulation.
  • Insulating materials, from the commonly available to the cutting edge, including the practical issues and compromises associated with each.
  • U-values of materials and understanding the heat loss of buildings.
  • Airtightness and vapour control.
  • Renewable energy options and sustainable water systems.
  • Informal discussion on your own eco-refurbishment project.
  • If you’re looking to turn your building into an energy-efficient, low impact home or office space, this course will help you understand where to start and give you the skills and knowledge to choose the best methods and materials to suit your needs.

Retrofit Exhibition at the Building Centre

Until October 12th you can visit this exhibition- Retrofit 23: Towards Deep Retrofit of Homes at Scale. Address: 26 Store Street, WC1E 7BT.

Retrofit 23 looks at how we achieve residential retrofitting at scale and focuses on how improving the performance of a home brings economic, social, and environmental benefits.

The need to retrofit existing buildings is currently one of the biggest challenges in the built environment and will be for the next 20 years if we are to meet the government’s target of net zero by 2050.

It has a wide variety of information about what is happening around the country, including examples of community retrofit initiatives. One example is Civic Square in Ladywood, Brimingham, a community building organisation dedicated to advancing a just transition for the local neighbourhood, who are working on the idea of street-scale retrofit.
